Breaking Bread was a project about people coming together, making bread, sharing stories and learning something new. The project also aimed to promote wellbeing by tackling broader topics of loneliness and the widening gap between generations.

The Breaking Bread project was a partnership with CARIAD (Centre for Applied Research In Inclusive Arts and Design) and aimed to create a platform for intergenerational engagement that enabled younger and older people to connect through the shared activity of making bread. Through this practical activity the sharing of stories and experience took place naturally i.e sharing memories of making bread with members of the family in the past, cooking habits, sharing recipes and hobbies etc.

The project consisted of a series of workshops led by yello brick & CARIAD and established bakers in the community. No prior knowledge was required from anybody in bread making or cooking, knowledge was gained and shared through participation on the day. During the course of the project a number of workshops were run that included bread making, cake making and pizza making. People could connect easily through a shared experience and spend time with new people and possibly learn something new.

The degree of ‘sharing’ provided by the workshop and the possibilities to connect with people in creative and exciting ways is a great way to look at tackling some of our wider societal issues
